Why Use SEO for E-commerce?

Ranking above your competitors on search engines is a must, especially if your business is primarily done over the internet.  If this applies to you – i.e. you use an e-commerce business model – then it can be difficult to know where to start.

Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO, can be a daunting task, especially if you have a small team and less resources to spend on digital marketing than big, established businesses.

But that shouldn’t keep you from striving for that #1 ranking on Google!

In this article, we’re going to go into more detail about why SEO is worth it for your e-commerce platform.

1. SEO is Now an Industry Standard

Google is the most visited website in the world.  Obviously, the significance of that for businesses is huge.

It means that, at one point or another, you are going to be going through Google.

Unfortunately, if you do not optimise your business for search engines, you will find it very difficult to compete with businesses that do.  SEO is the way of the world now.

To increase your clicks and conversions, you need visibility.  Without SEO, your visibility will fall far behind that of your competitors.

As already mentioned, you want to be as near to the top of the search engine results page (or SERP) as possible, as that is where the most traffic is.  Without search engine optimisation, you will be stuck nearer the bottom of the SERP, benefitting from much less traffic.

2. SEO Creates Traffic, Then Leads, Then Conversions

If your business’ page is not very visible, you lose out on exposure.  People won’t know about your brand or what you have to offer.

That means you will have little interest and few customers, let alone repeat customers.

SEO fosters visibility, creating a very helpful cycle.  As you become more visible, you will inevitably pull in more customers.  As you get more customers, you will become more visible as people will be talking about your brand.  As you grow and gain in revenue, you will be able to spend more on marketing, and so on…

This is a very good feedback loop to have going for you!

To be clear: the extra money pulled in from conversions as a result of SEO will be more than enough to cover the money you spent on SEO in the first place.  It will be worth it  – in the long term, it is cost effective!

3. Cost Effectiveness

That nicely segues into the final point – cost effectiveness.

SEO may seem like a huge cost to deal with, especially if you are at the early stages of your business, but it is actually cheap in relation to other strategies.

Alternative methods like pay-per-click (PPC), advertising, influencer marketing and others are far more expensive.  They are not to be discounted entirely, but be prepared to spend a lot more money on them.

Also, if implemented in the right way, SEO has the potential to be a great continuing source of traffic and leads.  This can go on a long time after the beginning of the campaign.

Plus, as already explained, SEO will effectively pay for itself in the long run!  And even basic SEO implementation will make a big difference, and the more you do the better!

In Sum

There are so many different ways in which SEO helps your business.  So many, in fact, that it has become an industry standard and a staple of digital marketing!

It’s a relatively cheap way to set your business up well for the long term.
