3D Printed Computer: Additive manufacturing (AM) has become a pioneer for many innovative projects. From medical science to aerospace, every industry is embracing the technology for attaining sustainable and cost-effective solutions. Then why not, computer science.

With endless possibilities, 3D printing is winning over various conventional methods to offer users with best possible results. And, the same stands true when it comes to 3D printing computers. Although there is still a lot of work remaining before one can come up with a fully functional desktop using AM technology, the current advancements cannot be ignored.

So, let us find out all the components we can 3D print for a computer and the various experiments that instil faith in the bright future that the technology holds within the computer science domain.

Is It Possible to 3D Print Computers?

There is no doubt that 3D printing is a powerful technology that can change the way we manufacture things. Starting with simpler prototypes to end products, its application is highly pronounced within almost every field.

However, when it comes to 3D printed computers, we are still in the nascent phase. That does not mean the progress is any shorter. With consistent developments, although in smaller scale, is leading the technology to a brighter future where printing computers certainly won’t be a difficult task.

For instance, the recent innovations in the electronics field making conductive 3D printing possible has already taken us many steps forward. Hence, giving way to new outlooks. Being able to 3D print enclosures for electronic devices, we already have a few promising processes, which if tweaked a little can make 3D Printed computers a reality.

Already, we have been able to print a few electronic devices using 3D printing. So, why not wait and include computers on a 3D printable products checklist.

Progress Made Regarding 3D Printed Computers

Yes, we haven’t concluded the printing of large scale and powerful computers yet. However, there are many advancements ensuring that the time is not far beyond.

Here is a list of components related to computer science that we have already started printing using AM technology.

Adafruit’s 3D Printed Raspberry Computer

Starting with the most fascinating development within computer science, Adafruit has come up with its 3D printed Raspberry Pi-based computer. Adafruit is a hardware company which is involved in the designing and manufacturing of electronic products. You can find more about this computer on their website.

This device, which looks like a small computer, cost Adafruit $225 for manufacturing. Talking about the functionalities, the PC allows communication. Hence, further instilling beliefs among additive manufacturing enthusiasts that computers can too be printed.

Although the technology isn’t perfect yet and needs improvements, the initiative by Adafruit is applaudable. And, it certainly is a great push to those who are trying to bring better AM solutions within the computer science domain.

A 3D Printing Project by ASUS

Asus is a very popular company. Engaged in the manufacturing of computers and phone hardware, it is a well-known electronics company. Lately, the company has been over news after adding a new option for their customers. Now, the customers can opt to 3D print components of the motherboard for modifying the appearance as desired.

The company shares their STL files with 3D designs. Hence, users can modify these models and order for the custom made computer parts created using 3D printers. Like every other product, gears etc, computers are also easily customizable nowadays. Using additive manufacturing, users can choose for 3D printable parts such as motherboard holders, include tags, fan holders etc.

3D Printed Liquid-Cooled PC

This again is a very interesting project led by 3DSystem. They developed this rare 3D printed liquid-cooled PC. To be precise, the company designed a computer along with an unusual cooling system. Taking inspiration from the world’s first computer’s vacuum tubes, 3DSystem accomplished its project of 3D printed liquid-cooled PC.

In order to design the CAD models, the experts 3D scanned the various PC components. With the help of various applications (Geomagic Design and Geomagic Freeform design software), the company utilized the CAD models for creating an innovative and unique PC’s housing unit.

Although the company used CNC machining along with 3D printing to complete the project, the role of additive manufacturing cannot be ignored.

Computer Cases

Using 3D Printers, users can also create various parts for computers. For instance, The Complex and Aetos projects aim at creating better and customizable 3D printed PC cases for users. These cases flaunt an astonishing design, while the company is trying to enhance the aesthetic customization.

The company claims that the additive manufacturing technology has helped the team to design with a great freedom. Hence, enabling the team to print structures in one go. Considering the limitations of the traditional manufacturing methods, it may not have been possible to accomplish without 3D printers.

Why 3D Print a Computer?

We have been talking about what all we can 3D print to develop a fully functional computer. However, why do we need a 3D Printed computer in the first place?

Well, there are many benefits, not only for the consumers but the manufacturers as well. And, the most important perk is the cost saving. 3D printing to computers can actually help manufacturers save a lot of money. As the technology utilizes the exact amount of material used for manufacturing, the companies do not need to spend excess on materials. This is environmentally friendly as well.

In addition, with unimaginable design freedom, It is also easier to develop complex designs, not possible otherwise.

The Conclusion

3D printing can offer experts ways to develop efficient computers. Not only designs, but the technology can help create better cooling systems, PC cabinets and more. As the technology is evolving at a faster pace, the newer possibilities for computer science are becoming more evident.

AM brings with itself new materials and processes such as metal 3D printing, to offer industries promising applications in the future. And, computer science too would witness the similar rise in trend of 3D printed components. Hence, finally making room for 3D printed computers.
