8 Positive Ways to Have a Healthy Mind

Everyone wants to keep their mind active and healthy. They want to do the best they can to maintain focus, think clearly, and avoid life-diminishing diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

There are ways to improve your mind, keep it balanced, and help it stay healthy. There are seven positive ways listed below.

Get Good Sleep

Sleep has a huge impact on mental health. Those who don’t get enough sleep can’t think clearly, can’t make good judgments on decisions and extended time without sleep can also make you anxious and paranoid. Sleep resets the brain and clears toxins.

Be Careful What You Put Into Your Mind

There is a saying “garbage in, garbage out” and this is true of the mind. If you fill your mind with negative thoughts and images, you will lose mental stability. The degrees of this loss varies on what you are putting into your mind. Things like pornography, violence, negative or violent music can have a huge impact on how you think over time. Experts also warn not to consume too much news and social media because both have negative effects on the mind.

Graham Davey, editor-in-chief of the Journal of Experimental Psychopathology, said the visually shocking nature of news and how people access it is detrimental to general mental health. Additionally, more than 50 percent of Americans say the news stresses them out. Yet, 20 percent say they monitor their social media feeds constantly.

Get Moving

Exercise is not only good for the body but offers benefits to mental health as well. Exercise releases endorphins and endorphins are what bring out the feelings of happiness. Exercise also gets your adrenaline pumping, which can be a motivator to accomplish other tasks. Those accomplishments bring you the satisfaction that also contributes to positive mental health.

Eat Nutritious Meals

An improper diet can add to anxiety and nervousness, which can affect mental capabilities. Likewise, eating nutritious meals can improve awareness and thinking. Some foods that are known to help with brain function include foods with omega 3 fatty acids, greens, and berries.

Take a Break

You just can’t work all the time. Both your body and your brain need a break from routine. This helps you rejuvenate and energize to complete all your tasks and carry on with your responsibilities.

Whether it is a mini-vacation, a longer trip, a spa day, or just a 10-minute break to take a walk, getting away from your work will help you maintain mental balance.

Many people find that getting the morning started with meditation or prayer helps set the tone for the day. This type of practice grounds the thoughts that act as a filter for all input coming at you throughout the day. Others find that a mid-afternoon meditation or prayer time helps calm them on tough days.

Spend Time with Friends and Family

Everyone needs time with those they love to keep this mental balance. These are the people who support you no matter what, but who will also tell you the truth and set you straight if you need it.

Social outings also result in better blood circulation because talking and listening activate the brain.

Try Something New

Minds need stimulation and the more you seek out new things the more your mind is awakened to possibilities. This could be reading books, taking a class, learning a new language, or taking up a new hobby. It could also mean visiting a place you’ve never tried before such as an ethnic restaurant, a museum, or an art gallery.

Doing something new activities a different part of the brain than what you have been using, promoting better overall brain function.
